The bachelor thesis or bachelor thesis is an internationally recognized form of completion of the bachelor program. Especially with regard to the writing of bachelor theses, many students are uncertain about how to tackle the topic and whether or to what extent they can use their help.

Before writing the bachelor thesis

Bachelor students who are faced with the question of which topic they would like to work on through their thesis should first think about their own interests and work priorities. Is there a topic that already appeared interesting during my studies and has already been taken up in other study projects? Then there is a high probability that the associated motivation also strengthens the perseverance for the bachelor thesis.

Prior to writing, it is important to keep a close eye on the examination regulations and the actual requirements, which may differ from subject to subject and from university to university.

As a rule, three to four months are available as the processing period for the bachelor thesis. Within this period, the different activities such as researching and analyzing literature as well as writing must be organized. In addition, a sufficient time frame should be created for the subsequent correction.

Structure of the bachelor thesis

The structure of a bachelor thesis is structured as follows and basically valid for almost all forms of scientific work. It consists of the cover sheet, tables of contents (chapters, figures, tables, etc.), the text and a bibliography and, if necessary, an appendix. Depending on the topic, special directories (for example, a formula dictionary for working in mathematics or physics) are still necessary.

In detail, the structure of a bachelor thesis looks like this:

Cover sheet

The cover page contains the title of the work and additional information such as the name of the author, the supervising professor, as well as the name and / or the coat of arms of the university. Cotents

The table of contents of the work is in principle self-explanatory. Important is a correct and clear formatting with indication of the page numbers. Main chapters can be printed in bold for a better overview, the respective subchapters are indented accordingly. Word provides some handy features for automatically creating TOCs. This eliminates the need to manually update the chapter headings and page numbers when making changes.

List of illustrations and tables

Mapping and table directories are always required when more than two figures or tables are used in the work. These directories should be designed in the same way as the table of contents and should contain the title of the image / table as well as the page number. These directories can also be created and updated automatically by Word.

Abbreviations

The list of abbreviations lists all the specific abbreviations used in the work. Commonly used abbreviations such as “e.g.” or “etc.” are not normally included in the directory. If only common and known abbreviations are used in the thesis, no abbreviation directory has to be created. The situation is similar with the symbol index – in most works this is not necessary.

Text part

The text portion (often subdivided into preface, body and conclusion / conclusion) is usually formatted in block-type with automatic hyphenation. Most fonts are Times New Roman (12pt) or Arial (11pt). Important in the design of the text of a bachelor thesis is a well-structured and meaningful structure. This should be worked out before writing. A well thought out structure makes reading the work easier and helps the reader to find his way around quickly.
